Registration for EM Autumn School 2019 open

Directly following the Microscopy Conference MC2019, a consortium of universities and research labs in the Berlin area is organizing the Autumn School on Electron Microscopy in Materials Science on Friday, September 6 & Monday, September 9, 2019.

The EM Autumn School 2019 will have a different concept from previous EM Autumn Schools which consisted of lectures and practicals. While the content will be very similar (e.g. to the EM Autumn School 2017), the lectures for the EM Autumn School 2019 will be available online and should be viewed ahead of the actual school. Where most of the time will be spent with hands-on practicals at microscopes located in different laboratories in Berlin. Since the online lectures are an integral part of the EM Autumn School, some key lectures are accompanied by online tests, that are intended to help you assess the knowledge gained from the lectures. Upon request, a certificate listing the tests that have already been passed, will be issued. Admission to the practical courses requires having already passed the corresponding tests. This will ensure that all participants have a high level of understanding of electron microscopy and especially the advanced techniques that will be covered during the practical courses. Therefore, the two day school can really focus on providing hands-on experience in advanced transmission electron microscopy methods to the participants.

Program of EM Autumn School 2019

Mon., Sept. 09 Practical courses at different laboratories
9:30 – 12:00
Mon., Sept. 09Practical courses at different laboratories
14:00 – 17:00

The following practical courses are offered:
Off-Axis Electron Holography (at Technische Universität)
Inline Electron Holography (at Humboldt-Universität)
Low-Voltage 4D-STEM (at Humboldt-Universität)
In-Situ Gas-Flow Experiments (at Fritz-Haber-Institut)
Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (at Fritz-Haber-Institut)
Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (at Fritz-Haber-Institut)

The detailed program may be viewed here.

Online Lectures and Tests

The online material is provided as a Moodle online course that feature an introduction to electron microscopy as well as lectures on several advanced topics, initially the topics of the practical courses (off-axis holography, in-line holography, momentum-resolved STEM and spectroscopy via EDX and EELS ). This course will remain online beyond the EM Autumn School and will continuously be enhanced with new material. It will thus serve as an online course tht can be taken from anywhere in the world, without the need to travel. Access will be available to registered participants free of charge.

Registration: Free

Since only a few lectures will be given and most of the two days are dedicated to practical training, the funding of the Berlin EM Network by the German Science Foundation (DFG) will allow the registration fee for partipants to be waived. However, the number of participants is limited to no more than 40. After the inscription deadline ends we will sort the inscriptions to try to give as many labs as possible access to the course (instead of e.g. 10 people from the same lab) and then inform you if you will be able to participate.
