After Microscopy Conference MC2019, a consortium of universities and research labs in the Berlin area is organizing the Autumn School on Electron Microscopy in Materials Science.
The EM Autumn School 2019 will have a different concept from previous EM Autumn Schools which consisted of lectures and practicals all being held during a week-long event. While the content will be very similar (e.g. to the EM Autumn School 2017), the procedure of how this content is being taught during the Autumn school 2019, will be quite different. Lectures and practical courses will now be separeted. Lectures for the EM Autumn School 2019 will be available online and should be viewed ahead of the actual school, preparing you for the hands-on practicals at microscopes located in different laboratories in Berlin which are offered in a condensed 2-day practical part of the school. Since the online lectures are an integral part of the EM Autumn School, some key lectures are accompanied by online tests, that are intended to help you assess the knowledge gained from the lectures. Upon request, a certificate listing the tests that have already been passed, will be issued. Participation in the practical courses requires having already passed the corresponding tests. This will ensure that all participants have a high level of understanding of electron microscopy and especially the advanced techniques that will be covered during the practical courses. Therefore, the two day school can really focus on providing hands-on experience in advanced transmission electron microscopy methods to the participants.
Program of EM Autumn School 2019, Dec. 12 & 13, 2019
Dec. 12 | Lectures at Department of Physics, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in Berlin-Adlershof |
9:30 – 12:00 | |
Dec. 12 | Practical courses at different laboratories |
14:00 – 17:00 | |
Dec. 13 | Practical courses at different laboratories |
9:30 – 12:00 | |
Dec. 13 | Practical courses at different laboratories |
14:00 – 17:00 |
The following practical courses are offered:
Off-Axis Electron Holography (at Technische Universität)
Inline Electron Holography (at Humboldt-Universität)
Low-Voltage 4D-STEM (at Humboldt-Universität)
In-Situ Gas-Flow Experiments (at Fritz-Haber-Institut)
Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (at Fritz-Haber-Institut)
Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (at Fritz-Haber-Institut)
Online Lectures and Tests
Starting September 6, 2019 the online material is provided as a Moodle online course that feature an introduction to electron microscopy as well as lectures on several advanced topics, initially the topics of the practical courses (off-axis holography, in-line holography, momentum-resolved STEM and spectroscopy via EDX and EELS ). This course will remain online beyond the EM Autumn School and will continuously be enhanced with new material. It will thus serve as an online course tht can be taken from anywhere in the world, without the need to travel. Access will be available to registered participants free of charge.
Registration: Free
Since practically all of the lectures are given online and the part of the school that is dedicated to practical training lasts only for two days, the funding of the Berlin EM Network by the German Science Foundation (DFG) will allow the registration fee for partipants to be waived. However, the number of participants that partake in the practical courses is limited to 40. You may register at this link. After October 31 we will admit registered participants, giving as many labs as possible access to the practical course (instead of e.g. 10 people from the same lab) and then inform you if you will be able to participate. The number of participants in the online course is not limited.
